The General Post Office, also known as the Grand Postal
Building, is a historic building in the Bang Rak District of
Bangkok. Opened on 24 June 1940 on the former site of the
British Legation, it was designed by architects Sarot Sukkhayang
and Jittasen (Mew) Aphaiwong in a mixture of Art Deco and
International Style architecture which reflected the desire of
the ruling People's Party to project a modern and powerful image
of the state. Today, the building remains functioning as a
Thailand Post's post office which provides postal services to
the general public, and a portion of the building now houses the
Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC). The building
illustrates political symbols in many ways; one of them is the
sixcolumns flanking the two wings of the central building. Those
impose the People’s Party ideology of six principles as the
supreme power of the Thai people, national security, economic
welfare, the equality of Thai people, the protection of people’s
rights and liberties, and public education for all citizens. Two
Garuda sculptures are located over the central façade. In
front of the building stand a statue of Marshal Bhanurangsi
Savangwongse, (Prince Bhanubandhu Vongsevoradej 1859–1928) he is
best remembered as the founder of the Thai postal service and
the first Field marshal in Royal Siamese Army during King
Vajiravudh. |
