Description: |
|
The memorial statue of King Rama VI, sculpted by Professor
SilpPhirasri, is located
in front of Lumpini Park as a a tribute to King Vajiravudh and
his legacy to the residents and visitors to Bangkok. It was
enshrined on 7 June 1941. H.M. King BhumibolAdulyadej presided
over the opening of the monument on 27 March 1942.
The
area, in which the royal statue of King Rama 6 is situated, has
an interesting history in that Lumpini Park is the first public
park in Thailand. It is located on Thanon Rama 4 surrounded by
ThanonWittayu, ThanonRatchadumri and Soi Sarasin, KwaengLumpini,
Pathumwan District, Bangkok. It was constructed in the reign of
King Rama VII. Formerly, it possessed 360 rais at Saladaeng
Field which King Rama VI gave in order to build “Siam Museum” to
exhibit Thai product for the first time. The reason why Thailand
established this museum is that the country would like to host
the famous World’s exposition. However, due to the World War I
and the fact that the King passed away, the plan was cancelled.
Consequently, it was transformed into a public park given the
name “Lumpini Park” as the birth place of the Lord Buddha is
called “Lumpini” in Nepal.
It is a multi-purpose park,
used in many recreational activities for the public and used as
a place for recreational centers and clubs under the vision of
green area, which is agreeable and is sheltered with old trees.
These trees surround the natural atmosphere which includes a
large pond, various kinds of colorful and green plants, notable
palm gardens or splendid bamboo gardens among some buildings.
These factors play a vital role in the ecosystem as a shelter
and food resources for animals.
Chulalongkorn Hospital,
Bangkok Night Bazaar and the underground train (Silom and
Lumpinee Station) are also located in the vicinity. The area is
an appropriate photo location and several historic get-togethers
of Thai history.
