SHRINES AND RELIGIOUS PLACES  -  Guangdong Shrine
ศาลเจ้ากวางตุ้ง(ถงจิ้งถัง)
 Address:
Known as:   Kwang Tung Shrine  Canton Shrine
Description:   The Chinese Temple was founded by a group of Chinese immigrants from Canton during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Initially they formed an unofficial association in 1877 (B.E. 2420), known as Kwong Sio Pavilion (Residence of the Cantonese). It was used as their meeting place so that they could help each other. Then they collected approximately 17,000 baht to buy a piece of land on Charoen Krung Road to establish a charity group to be run by the Chinese committee. Later in 1880 (B.E. 2423), they planned to have a shrine built and sent people to China to look for construction material and decorative items for the Shrine. Stone columns, stone staircases, stone lion statues, earthen dragons and tiles were sent from China to be assembled in Thailand in accordance with traditional Chinese architectural style. The Shrine was registered as a religious sanctuary on March 15, 1920 (B.E. 2463).
In the Shrine are Chinese dieties brought from China. The Chinese believe that they will bring good luck and prosperity to themselves and their families. A few of the dieties are Gong-Wu, Ngoen-Chang-Ti-Chun (Emperor Ngek Sian), Guan Yim and Lu Pan. At present, the Shrine is in the keeping of the administration in the Ministery of the Interior.
