Ban Sangka U is a village in Moo 7, Ko Lanta Yai Subdistrict, Ko
Lanta District, Krabi, about 27 kilometres south of the Ko Lanta
District Office. The majority of the residents here are the Urak
Lawoi people. They were once Sea Gypsies, nomads who lived on
fishery, but later settled in this area. As their settlement is
near a bay, the village is called “Sangka U”, an Urak Lawoi word
that means a bay.
The village is situated on a coastal
plain lying at the foot of mountains. Near the village are bays
and small beaches. In addition, there are only two seasons here,
i.e. the hot season which lasts from January until May and the
rainy season which begins in June and ends in December.
Furthermore, there are interesting local performances including
the Ronggeng Dance, Rammana show (local music) and the ancient
Ramwong dance. Apart from these cultural shows, visitors can
enjoy several major local festivals, e.g.
-The Loi Ruea
Ceremony: It is held twice a year from the 13th waxing moon days
till the new moons of the sixth and the 11th lunar months. The
purpose of the ceremony is to dispel bad luck, ask for peace and
order of the village and send dead relatives off to Gunung
Jerai, the highest mountain in the Malaysian state of Kedah.
Thus, it is assumed that the people of Sangka U originally lived
somewhere in Kedah.
-The Lato Ceremony: it is a ceremony
of ancestor worship.
-The Buyalay Ceremony: it is held
so as to worship the sea.
-The Taeng Plew Ceremony
