City Pillar Shrine  -
ศาลหลักเมืองอ่างทอง
 Address:
 Known as:
Description:   Ang Thongs’ city shrine is located just opposite the city hall. It is a chaturamhuk (having four faces). The very top of the pagoda is surfaced with red cement while the shrine itself is raised from the ground by 1.5 meters. Inside, there are spectacular murals of rice stalks. Ang Thongs’ city shrine is the second to have murals on all 4 walls.
The city pillar is placed within the shrine on an octagon shaped pedestal with marble floors. The construction is from fine chai-ya-preuk wood, which is believed to be sacred. The wood was the only one chosen from five trees from Nikom-Sang-Ton-Eng-Phra-Phutta-Baht at the province of Saraburi. It has the characteristics of Mai-Kha-Nang; having a straight trunk and splitting into 2 branches, looking similar to ancient style catapult. This type of wood is an ideal choice for constructing a chapel or the pillar of sanctuaries. Ang Thongs’ wood has undergone several stages including the picking, the cutting ceremony, a summon ceremony, the ceremonial pole lathe and a welcoming celebration according to the royal regulations before it was actually used in construction. This city-shrine is decorated and gilded by Phra Kru Wised-Chaiwat and Mr.Kamjud Kongmeesuk, a local resident.
To the north of the shrine lies a Tri-Muk which is where, in ceremonies, his Majesty the King would be seated, so do common ceremonial presidents. To the south are 2 Thai style houses, one used for the donating of sacred objects, flowers, candles and joss sticks while the other is for showing off and distributing Ang Thongs’ valuables and sacred objects. Between the city shrine and Tri-Muk, which is around 30 meters apart, is reserved for ceremonies, activities and performances. The city shrine occupies 1.5 Rai of land in total, which allows it to also have a beautiful garden all around.
Ang-Thong’s city shrine is not only a beautiful landmark but also a sacred quarter.
