Thai National Theatre reflects the glory of Thai art. It is the
important place established from the idea of King Vachiravudh
(Rama VI) that Khon, Thai dance, and musical artists should
perform their art to the audience. They therefore need a place
or a theatre. Another important reason to establish Thai
National Theatre is to exchange cultures with other countries
which will strengthen the relationship.
In 1932, when
Fine Arts Department inherited the responsibilities about Khon,
Thai performance, and Thai music from Bureau of the Royal House
Hold, the conference hall of Fine Arts Department in National
Museum was adapted to be the temporary Thai National Theatre. In
1961, Fine Arts Department received the budget for permanent
Thai National Theatre construction. The construction completed
in the fiscal year 1965.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej and
Queen Sirikit came to watch Thai dance performance in the
opening ceremony on 23 December 1965. It was the first day of
Thai National Theatre usage.
From the first day until
now, Thai National Theatre has been following the intention of
King Vachiravudh’s idea. Thai artists have the area to show
their art which descends Thai cultural heritage to nowadays.
Moreover, here has been used as a place to welcome royal
visitors from foreign countries and exchange culture and art
with other countries. Thai National Theatre is suitable for
visitors who would like to visit significant places in art
branch and Thai culture. Performances are available for
visitors. The news about the performances will be pronounced
from Thai and foreign media. The Theatre provides complete
facilities for Thai and foreign tourists. This is therefore one
of interesting tourist attractions in Phra Nakorn Area. |
