The King Rama I Monument was built by Buriram local people in
appreciation of His Majesty’s kindness as he was Buriram city’s
founder. This monument also serves as the local spiritual center
and a symbol of loyalty to the King Rama I and Chakri Dynasty.
The bronze statue, which is two times bigger than the real King
Rama I, is in warrior suit sitting on the war elephant. It is
situated at the traffic circle where Buriram – Satuek road
intersects Buriram Prakhon Chai, Amphoe Mueang Buriram.
According to the historical evidences, in 1776, King Rama I, as
Chao Phraya Chakri at that time, moved the troops to conquer
Phraya Nangrong, the rebel. When he was on the way back, he
found an abandoned city which was situated in a good location.
He then decided to gather people and established a city known as
“Mueang Pae” as there were many trees called “Pae” in this area.
Later, its name was changed to “Buriram” in King Rama V’s era.
Therefore, Buriram people decided to build this monument in
appreciation of His Majesty’s kindness in 1995. |
