Phra Jao Yai is the sacred Buddha Image which is highly
respected by people in Burirum and the neighborhood provinces.
The Buddha Image is in Marn Vichai pose (sitting cross-legged,
placing the left hand at the middle while placing the right hand
on the knee in order to subdue mara). The Buddha Image is made
of bronze. The other pose is Samati (sitting cross-legged) which
is 1.6 meter wide and 2 meter tall, made of laterite. It is
believed that the Buddha image is created in 19 – 20 A.D., by
the skillful Laos artisan, which is considered as Laan Chang
art. The evidence used to indicate the pose is the specific hair
style which is widely found in North Eastern region and Laos.
The Buddha image is enshrined at Wat Hong Temple, Tombon Ma
Feung, Amphur Budthaisong, Buriram Province.
The legend
narrates that King Sri Pak (Na), King Ta Tong (Yot) and King Lek
Saton Kraisorn Sena, the Thai kings who had Laos’s lineage and
lived in Maha Sarakam Province, loved wandering in the forest
and going hunting. One day they shot the enormous magnificent
bird near the lotus pond. That bird fell down into the forest in
the east so they searched for it and unexpectedly found the
gigantic Buddha Image. Since they had never found such a great
Buddha Image before, they were deeply blissful. When they
observed around the great Buddha Image, they found a
square-shape pagoda. Surrounded the Buddha Image were the sugar
palm trees while winding around the Buddha Image was the tangled
shaggy vine. There was a big pond in the east but they found no
one living around that area. So they invited their relatives,
sisters and brothers to settle down in this area and together
built a temple called “Wat Hong” according to the shape of the
bird being shot.
On the Buddha Image, there is ancient Khmer language
inscribed on baked clay saying “Phra Jao Yai…”(The Big Buddha
Image) therefore, people call this Buddha Image “Phra Jao Yai”
from that time onward. It is presumed that the Buddha Image was
built with Budthaisong city in 2200 A.D. It should be over300
years old. Every year, when it comes to full moon day in 3rd
month of lunar calendar (February – March), the villagers will
arrange a festival to celebrate this annual event for 5 days 5
nights to pay respect to Phra Jao Yai.
