The nation’s first large-scale dam is located at the bend of
Bang Krabian River, Mu 3, Tambon Bang Luang. With a total length
of 237.5 meters and a height of 16.5 meters, this reinforced
concrete dam is built across flowing water and consists of 16
spillways.
The dam’s opening ceremony, dated February 7,
1957, was presided over by both His Majesty King
BhumibolAdulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The dam is
beautiful particularly between January and February, when it is
home to thousands of waterfowl. The dam also serves a practical
purpose, releasing water from the northern region to the central
lower basin for irrigation, hydroelectric power, and to conserve
marine animals. The Chao Phraya Dam provides 19 rooms for hire
at 600 baht a night.
To get there, from AmphoeMueang,
travel along Highway No. 304 and turn left towards
AmphoeSapphaya, proceeding for another 6 kilometers. Buses are
also another option: take the Bangkok – AmphoeWat Sing, Bus No.
1061 (Chai Nat – Pho Nang Tam), or Bus No. 110 (Sing Buri – Chai
Nat).
The Chao Phraya Dam is open daily from 8.00 am-5.00
