Description: |

The landscape of Chanthaburi Province is plain. Some parts of
the area are used for doing rice-farming and there are a number
of reeds growing there. Reeds have perfect quality for weaving
mats, which are well-known handicrafts in Chanthaburi Province.
When speaking of Chanthaburi’s famous place for weaving mat, it
cannot be anywhere else but “Ban Samet Ngam Chanthaboon Mat
Handicraft Center.” Ban Samet Ngam Chanthaboon Mat Handicraft
Center is located at Ban Samet Ngam in the village number 11,
Nong Bua Sub-district, Mueang District, Chanthaburi Province,
and is approximately 7 kilometers from the city center. At the
center, the villagers will spend their free time after
harvesting rice weaving mats in different patterns, especially
“Chanthaboon Mat” which is one of the “best products” in
Chanthaburi. Inside the center, the tourists can witness how
to weave mats by the weaving equipments called “beater,” which
requires 2 weavers. The process of weaving starts with
stretching the tendons with reeds (already colored and dried) by
threading the tendons through the entire gaps in the beater.
After that, one weaver has to push the reeds between beater and
tendons, while the other one moves the beater to hit the reeds
in order to make it attach and become one mat. However, those
who are interested in experiencing this demonstration have to
contact 0 3931 1565 in advance. Apart from witnessing how to
weave mats by hand, which acquires a great deal of efforts, the
tourists can also choose and buy some processed products made
from reeds by the villagers, such as glass mat, plate mat,
tissue paper box, bag, and mat, as a souvenir. Direction:
From the city center of Chanthaburi Province, go along
Chanthakamwithi Road. When passing Chanthaburi Technical
College, turn left and cross the bridge to Wat Ko Tanot. After
passing Wat Ko Tanot T-junction for around 20 meters, turn right
to Ang Hin- King Taksin Shipyard route for another 3 kilometers.
Opening time and day: Monday- Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
Admission fee: None. |
