Suan Ban Kaew Palace and Suan Ban Kaew Palace Museum are at 41,
Moo 5, Tha Chang subdistrict, Mueang district, Chanthaburi.
Formerly, it was the royal residence of Queen Rambhai Barni, the
Royal Consort of King Rama VII. There are several buildings
located within the palace ground. Currently, Suan Ban Kaew
Palace has become part of Rajabhat Rambhai Bhanni University and
is open to general visitors with no admission fee. The
history of Suan Ban Kaew Palace dates back to 1949 when Queen
Rambhai Barni brought with her King Rama VII’s ashes from
England back to Thailand. The queen then had Suan Ban Kaew
Palace built in Chanthaburi to be her residence. Queen
Rambhai Barni asked for a bank loan in order to buy 687 Rai of
property on the banks of Ban Kaew canal. Later the piece of land
was named “Suan Ban Kaew” after the canal. In its early stage
Suan Ban Kaew Palace was in a forested condition, so it needed a
massive property improvement prior to the construction of the
queen’s temporary residence. It was a thatched bamboo building.
20 June 1950 was the first day the queen stayed over at the
newly-built palace, although there has not been utilities supply
at that time yet. Later the queen had three more buildings
constructed. They are, namely, Ruen Thao for herself, Ruen Daeng
for her personal attendants, and a bungalow called Ruen Khio for
her secretary. These are the first three permanent buildings in
Suan Ban Kaew Palace. In 1972, the aging and unhealthy queen
graciously donated the estate where Ban Suan Kaew Palace is to
the Ministry of Education in order to increase educational
opportunities and establish an institute of higher education in
Chanthaburi. The queen spent the rest of her life at the
Sukhothai Palace. Visitors can get there via Highway 36,
which is currently a main road. Set off from KM 140 on Sukhumvit
Road near Bang La-mung district in Chonburi. Make a left turn at
Kra-ting Lai T-junction and drive pass Peera Circuit until
reaching Chiang Noen subdistrict, Mueang district, Rayong. The
distance is approximately 60 kilometers. Then continue driving
on Highway 3, which lasts for 108 kilometers, until you arrived
at Chanthaburi. The total distance is 308 kilometers. |
