Description: |

Wat Phra That Chom Chaeng is an ancient temple accompanied by a
long legendary myth. It is said that Phra Maha Terajarik visited
this temple to promulgate Buddhist teaching to the local people.
When he arrived in year 1458, he asked a man who practiced the
dharma at the temple to go and get the water for him to wash his
face from the Suai River. He stayed there for 7 days before he
left to other places. The monk had given the Buddha relics to be
placed in Phra That. He foresaw that in the future this place
will be called “Phra That Chom Chaeng” and the river, “Suai
River”. In 1939,
the venerable monk Adulsihawat (Singkam) became the dean of the
monks at Mae Suai sub-district and was given the superior monk
at Phra That Chom Chaeng. People started to come to the temple
because of his teaching which later the ceremony was created. In
every full moon of 8th month, there will be a huge celebration.
The venerable monk also invited local people to restore the
temple where the Buddha image called “Phra Thongtip” had been
located. It is
believed that if you come and pray for what you wish for at this
temple, you will get what you want.
To visit, from Wiang
Papao, drive north and take the highway 118 (Chiangmai-Chiangrai
route) heading to Mae Suai district past Chiangrai winery
factory, Somdej Phra Naresuan Maha Rat Shrine and Mae Suai
Hospital. Then cross Lao River Bridge. At the end of the bridge,
there is an alley on the left leading to Phra That Chom Chaeng
for 200 meters. The total distance equals to 40 kilometers. |
