Description: |
|
Wat Kao Wongkot is located at Khao Sanaam Chang in the district
of Baan Mhee, Lopburi surrounded by mountains on all 3 sides.
The site is an open valley having its entrance facing the east.
Originally, the temple was an abandoned ecclesiastical, but by
1917 Father Bhao Buddha-Sothorn, a Buddhist monk, found its
peacefulness and so established it as a temple; having granted a
piece of land to build its chapel on the 19th of June 1928.
Wat Kao Wongkot is nestled among mountains occupying 30 Rai of
land. A reclining Buddha is placed on the foot of a hill to the
west. A Barque at the temples’ entrance near a swan pillar is
where Lord Buddha’s footprint duplication is enshrined. There is
Somdej Luang Por Metta [Phra Pichit Maan] which is a remake of
the original in India. Within the shrine there stands a monument
of Father Bhao who was founder of this temple and nearby is a
crystal coffin where Luang Por Charoen lies, not decaying. At
the top of the mountain seats Phra Nak Prok Thip Munee Khiree
Wongkot and also a site seeing spot which presents a breath
taking view of Wat Kao Wongkot and the district of Baan Mhee. In
front of the temple is a pagoda on top of the Barque as a
remembrance of Father Bhao who founded the temple. There are
other significant figures of Wat Kao Wongkot which are
the bats living in a cave in the middle of the mountains to the
north, it is the largest bat cave in Lopburi; it is said to have
over a million bats living inside, besides the other significant
figure is the Samae monkey. The monkeys could be seen generally
around the temple area. Wat Kao Wongkot is one of the many
important temples in Baan Mhee. It has a long history and has
got quite a few sacred faculties in which, all, are highly
respected by local villagers. Nevertheless, this temple is also
the access to a spectacular view and the largest monkey cave in
the province. Visitors are welcome to pay their respects and
visit the other attractions every day from 9:00 to 17:00. |
