Sa Kaeo is a artificial pond located at the centre of Si
Suriyothai Circle, also known as Sa Kaeo Circle, on Narai
Maharat Road, Mueang Lopburi District. It is a landmark of the
new town of Lopburi. It was built during the FM Plaek
Phibunsongkhram era to be a reservoir and a public park of the
new town area. The construction began in 1938. In the middle
of Sa Kaeo stands a striking structure. It is a sculpture that
resembles a massive candle placed on a huge Phan, a Thai
pedestal tray, decorated with Thai style patterns. Found on the
side of the Phan are the seals of the ministries in the Plaek
era, for example, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of
Finance, the Ministry of Justice, etc. In addition, it is
characterised as a neo-fascist work of art. The neo-fascist art
movement was very popular at the time when dictatorship
dominated world politics. Moreover, around the base of the Phan
is a walkway allowing visitors to take a closer look at the
sculpture with four bridges from different directions connecting
it with the street around the roundabout. Furthermore, found
in the basin are four naga statues. Also, there are eight
couchant lion sculptures which symbolise the military situated
on both sides of the entrance of the bridge. The lions were
intentionally made to have muscles in order to look strong and
fierce. Additionally, seats are set along the rim of the pond.
