Ban Dong Lakhon Archeological Site is the location for an old
town that was present during the Khmer occupation of this
region. The old town is surrounded by earthen walls and
culverts, which has prompted the locals from calling the site
San Khu Mueang, which means double city walls with water canals
around. The walls and culverts are constructed in Dvaravati
style of architecture, which is quite common in the central part
of Thailand. Many artifacts have been excavated from the
site, including a ornate gold head of Buddha image, bronze ring,
glass beads, rock beads, bronze earrings, and crab and elephant
ring stamps. According to old legends, the Queen of Cambodia
used to reside here and made it difficult for people to come and
go. However, as the town is located among dense trees, it was
quite difficult for travelers to find it, and this added a lot
of mystery to it. Archaeological findings reveal that the
town saw two highs in civilization. The first was between the
14th and 16th century when Dvaravati culture was at its peak and
the second was between 17th and 19th century when Khmer culture
flourished. Somewhere around the 19th century, the people from
Dong Lakhon migrated to live near rivers, and many believe that
the present town of Si Mahosot, which is 55 kilometers away, was
created as a result. Ban Dong Lakhon Archaeological Site was
declared a national historical site in March 1935 by the Fine
Arts Department of Thailand. Ban Dong Lakhon Archeological
Site is located in Dong Lakhon sub-district of Nakhon Nayok. It
is around 9 kilometers from Nakhon Nayok town and was once upon
a time called Mueang Lap Lae or A Mysterious Town.
