Description: |

San Lak Mueang can be found in every province of Thailand. It
was constructed because the continuation of ancient traditions
and Brahman's customs believed that it has something to do with
the Held, the single city pillar ceremony (Held “Lak Muang”)
which is made of an Acacia wood (Chaiyaphreuk) before the
construction of the city for a major goal to build a city and to
be the centre of soul for the Thai citizen. Generally, the top
of the pillar is wooden carved lotus, Deva face or ancient Bai
Sema (boundary stone). The building style of the shrines varies,
especially in provinces with a significant Thai Chinese
influence, the city pillar may be housed in a shrine that
resembles a Chinese temple.
The statue of Chao Pho Lak Mueang or Chao Mae Lak Mueang,
the city spirit deity, in the shrine is usually built from wood
or laterite. The city pillar shrine can be found in many places
such as ancient community, city, in front of the city hall.
However, some cities may possess their own city pillar shrine
since it once was a province in the past. In addition, many
villages also have their own holy shrine which serves as a place
for worship ceremony because people believe that the Holy Spirit
will protect them. People in some small communities in rural
areas also believe that the center of the house is the heart of
the house which is represented in various forms of symbol. The
center of the house is sacred and serves as a place for the
worship ceremony in the village. Some communities also have the
city pillar after being established as sub-district or province
and it is usually located in the center of the area.
San
Lak Mueang of Nakhon Nayok is located by Nakhon Nayok river at
the old city wall. It is a 1 meter long wooden pillar, of which
top is wooden carved lotus. In 1990, the government relocated
the shrine to Tuek Daeng of Si Nakhon Nayok school, an all-girls
school of the province. Later, it was re-constructed in the King
Rama 9 commemoration public park by Nakhon Nayok river near Kob
Kuea Palace hotel. The new shrine has 4 archways and has been
highly revered until present. |
