Description: |
|
Wat Si Sawan Sangkharam, or Wat Thu Nam as it is known by
residents, is an ancient temple used in beautiful oath-taking
ceremonies for civil servants to pledge their allegiance to His
Majesty the King. Authentic spear blades, oars, knives and
swords remain from the temple’s heyday; one gold and one silver
Buddha image adorn its halls. The principal Buddha image in the
old convocation hall is well over a century old. The temple’s
religious significance is immense, its relics priceless.
In 1976, His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Queen and their
two daughters presided over the opening of a new hall. A pagoda
has since been erected to commemorate His Majesty’s 50th
Birthday during nationwide celebrations, known as the Golden
Jubilee.
To get there, take Highway No. 32 (Asian
Highway) then turn left towards Chiraprawat Fort (Highway No.
3001) for two kilometers.
Signs along the way point to Wat Thu Nam. It is about three
kilometers from the city. |
