Tham Sakoen national park is located in Pa Namyoaw and Pa
Namsuad forest reserves in Song Kawae district in the northern
part of Nan province, close to Laos. The 448 square kilometers
park is comprised of north-south rugged mountains that cross the
border between Laos and Thailand. The elevation ranges from 300
to 1752 meters above the sea level, the highest peak being Doi
Jee at 1752 meters. The mountains are the head waters of Lamnam
Yom and Lamnam Nan, two important rivers of the country.
The area receives south-west monsoon in rainy season, May to
October, and north-east monsoon during November to Febuary. The
hot season is from March to April. The average lowest tempeture
is about 8.1º C over the past several years, and average highest
temperature is about 40.9º C. The average yearly rainfall is
about 1,211 mm.
Tham Sakoen cave which is within walking
distance from the headquarters has a lot of stalagtites and
stalagmites inside. There are a couple of other interesting
caves, waterfalls, and nature trails in the park. At the moment
(year 2000 to 2004) the authorities have been preparing the park
to accept the tourists for nature study and overnight stay in
the park.
How to go there
From Nan drive on highway
1080 to the north for around 42 km to Tha Wang Pha town where
turn left onto highway 1148 and continue another 33 km to Song
Kawae town. Then at the intersection a few kilometers after the
town turn left to keep on the same road number 1148. Around 30
km more driving will take you to Ban Sakern village. Look for a
right turn road to the park headquarters, which is about 6 km. |
