Nonthaburi is an old province since when Ayutthaya was the
capital of Thailand. The first district of Nonthaburi is Baan
Talard Kwan. Nonthaburi was officially established as a province
in 1549, the time of King Maha Chakkraphat. According to the
evidence in royal annals saying that “King Maha Chakkraphat
built chedi vihara named Wat Sob Sawhun for Queen Suriyothai.
Then he said that people of
Ayutthaya’s minor
cities had ran away into forests and mountains making it
difficult to unite them back in the city. Therefore, from now on
Ta-Jeen area shall be Sakhonburi (Samut Sakhon province) and
Baan Talard Kwan shall be Nonthaburi”
The inscription in
royal annals above proves that Nonthaburi was certainly
established as a province in 1902. First, there was no city
pillar but there might be city shrine which King Narai the Great
gave an order to build it at the entrance of Om canal. There
were 3 city god statues believed to protect the city, Chao Por
Luk Meung, Chao Por Sue Meung and Chao Por Song Meung. However,
there was no clue of City Pillar. The Fine Arts department also
insisted on that.
City Pillar is the heart of the city.
It unites and harmonizes all the lives in the city. It is also a
place for the city gods, Chao Por Luk Meung, Chao Por Sue Meung
and Chao Por Song Meung, to stay in order to protect and enrich
the city. To build a City Pillar, royal permission is mandatory.
There is only one City Pillar per province allowed.
Thus, when Mr. Parinya Narkshatri was Nonthaburi’s
provincial governor, he asked for permission to build a new city
hall at government center on Rattanathibet road and also a City
Pillar nearby. It is of great generosity from King Bhumipol as
he sent Crown Pirnce Maha Vajiralongkorn to perform the City
Pillar of Nonthaburi founding ceremony on Friday the third of
February 1989. After that, the City Pillar construction
committee started to collect money to build the pillar. |
