Description: |

Wat Bang Kwang has an Ubosot, surrounded with sema(stone
boundary markers of the ubosot). Initially, this ubosot was in
ancient shape, but in 1960, it was renovated and repaired by
Phra Yan Warodom (Son Kitjasaro). Inside enshrines the bejeweled
Buddha image in ‘torturing Dame Maha Chompoo posture’. Normally,
the ubosot will be opened only during the morning and evening
chanting. It is assumed that Wat Bang Kwang had been built since
Ayutthaya period. At first, the temple was called “Wat Bang
Yang”, since there used to be a gigantic rubber tree (or Ton
Yang) beside Klong Bang Sri Thong canal, but later it was cut
down by the municipality since this rubber tree had been hit by
the lightning. During the reign of King Prasat Thong, he saw
that travelling through the existing river route was circuitous,
which wasted a lot of time. Therefore, the king decided to dig
up the ground from the area around Wat Khemaphirataram until the
river mouth to pave a new river way. Part of Klong Bang Sri
Thong was accordingly cut off. The upper part of the canal was
still called Klong Bang Sri Thong as originally. However, the
lower part of the canal was given a new name “Klong Bang Kwang”.
Assumably, this canal had obstructed the new river way, so
villagers called it Klong Bang Kwang (or an obstructive canal).
As for the temple, it was called after the canal as “Wat Bang
Kwang” until nowadays.
Wat Bang Praek Taai is located
right behind Bang Kwang Central Prison, near zone 9 and 11. At
present, zone 11 is used for executing prisoners with most
serious crimes. The bodies of the dead prisoners will be pulled
out of “the red gate”(Pratu Daeng) or known in another name as
“the ghost gate” (Pratu Pee), which is a low small squared red
door. In the old days, the execution of the prisoners changed
prisons, and places many times. Until the reign of King Rama
VII, after Bang Kwang Central Prison was completely constructed,
the officials then move the prisoners here, and execute them
here since then. |
