Wat Chalerm Phra Kiat Woraviharn is located on address 86, moo
3, Thanamnon-Wat Bot Don Phrom Road, Tambon Bang Sri Muang,
Amphoe Muang, Nonthaburi. It is adjoining to Chao Phraya river.
King Rama III (Phra Bat Somdet Phra Nangklao Chao Yu Hua) had
built this temple on the area, formerly belonged to his
Majesty’s grandparents, and mother in order to commemorate their
honors.
Wat
Chalerm Phra Kiat is a second-class royal monastery, in
‘woraviharn’ type. It was initially built in 1847, and
completely constructed during the reign of King Rama V (Phra Bat
Somdet Phra Chula Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua). The temple received
‘the Excellence of the Conserved Building’ Award from Siam
Architect Association in 1993. There are many attractions here,
such as an Ubosot in Thai-Chinese style or ‘Phra Rajaniyom’
style, architectural style usually built during the reign of
King RamaIII . It has a Chinese-style ceramic corrugated roof,
embellished with colorful porcelain in Pud-Tan leaves and
flowers (or cotton rose) patterns. Chofa (the gable), and Bai
Raka (toothlike ridges on the sloping edge of the gable) were
adorned with various porcelain designs from China. Door and
window facades were decorated with beautiful stucco in Pud-Tan
leaves and flowers patterns. Inside the Ubosot enshrined
‘‘Phraphuttamahalokaphinanthapatima’, a principle copper Buddha
image in Marn Vichai posture.
Moreover, the temple also
features 2 more buildings next to the Ubosot; Phra Viharn (or
Viharn Phra Sila Khao enshrined the Buddha image ‘Phra Sila
Khao’), and Kan Parian Luang (a hall for sermons, inside
enshrined ‘Phra Puttapatima Chaiwat’). At the back of Phra
Ubosot is located a
Lanka-style octagonal chedi, which houses the Lord Buddha
relics.
For transportation, from Nakorn In Road, head to
Rama V bridge. When reaching Bang Sri Thong Intersection (Bang
Kruay—Sai Noy Rd.), keep left, and get prepared to enter
Thanamnon-Wat Bot Road. Go straight ahead until see Chalerm Phra
Kiat Hospital on the left, then turn right into Soi Wat Chalerm
Phra Kiat. Continue driving to Chao Phraya river, you will
notice the temple. For Phra Viharn and Kan Parian Luang, they
are open only on weekends, and on important Buddhist days. |
