Description:   Pottery making in Ko Kret, Pak Kret Subdistrict, Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi is the heritage of the Mon people whose ancestors immigrated to Thailand in the late Ayutthaya Period. It is assumed that they were skilled potters when living in the Mon State. After immigrating to Thailand, they were allowed to settle in Pak Kret by the king. This area, particularly Ko Kret, possesses clay that is suitable for pottery; that is, it is cream-coloured or yellow clumpy sticky clay. Also, it is not friable and not too dark.

The best-known earthenware is Mo Nam Lai Wichit, usually used as an offering to monks and a gift for senior persons. It is also officially used as Nonthaburi’s provincial seal. Apart from the famous earthenware, there are various types of potteries made here, for instance, water jars, bowls, pestles, pots, and Ong Phlu. In addition, some new types of earthenware are created, e.g. carved earthenware lamps, carved earthenware clocks, earthenware candle lamps, etc.

The characteristics of Ko Kret’s earthenware are prominently visible. It is orange-red earthenware made of natural clay which is formed into objects of a required shape and heated. Without being enamelled, it features beautiful natural colours. Its rim is as round as the rim of a bamboo tube. Moreover, before the clay gets hardened by heating, beautiful well-designed patterns are carved into earthenware’s soft texture.

The clay soil that is suitable for pottery making is the one from paddy fields and river deltas. It has a fine texture with little sand and few other objects mixed with it. As a result, it does not take much time to remove them from the clay. Nowadays, sources of good clay become harder to find. As land values increase, those who operate clay mines have to lease land with high lease payment. One of the sources of good clay from river deltas is located in Sam Khok District, Pathum Thani.

Due to flooding, Ko Kret’s pottery nearly disappeared. However, in 1996 the locals formed a group to protect their ancestors’ intellect. Besides, at that time, tourists started to visit Ko Kret. As a consequence, Ko Kret’s potteries became popular again. Today modern pottery wares are developed in order to add value to products and make them become markets’ wanted products.
