Description: |

Wat Chang is located at moo 6, Tombon Baan Chang, Pathumthani
province. It is located at the Chao Praya riverside which is
on the same side of the town hall. It is around 1 kilometer away
from the city in the south and 6 kilometers from Tombon Samkok.
The temple was granted the permission to be built Ubosot hall or
what we called “Wisungkhamsima” on 13 July 1891. Inside the
temple are permanent structures and antiques. It is presumed
that this temple was built in King Rama II reign by Mon people
who lived in Maotama town. At that time, King Padueng, the
Burmese king appointed one Burmese as Maotama town lord.
However, he oppressed Mon people as they could not fight back.
Therefore the Mon who is the town lord and the committee
together decided to migrate to live under the Thai King’s
virtue. Samingsodbao was the leader of migration at the time.
They successfully moved to Thailand and lived happily.
In 1815, the year of pig,
the situation was getting worse since Maotama people were still
oppressed by Burmese people. Maotama people planned to kill the
Burmese lord and migrated to Thailand through Tak, Utthaithani
and mainly the three Pagoda Pass in Kanchanaburi. The King
ordered the prince of the palace to welcomed Mon families to
settle down in Nonthaburi and provided facilities such as
Jak roof and wood for building the residences. There were
around 40,000 Mon people who were allowed to settle down at
Pathumthani and Nonthaburi. The leader of the migrated,
Samingsodbao was appointed to be Phraya Ratanachak. Those
Raman who were the high rank in Raman society were appointed the
title as Phraya too. It is presumed that Mon people migrated
to Tombon Ban Chang and the government service built the barn to
collect utensils and equipments for Mon. Therefore, the place
used for welcoming Mon people was called “Ban Chang” as Chang
means “barn”. In 2117, many migrated Mon gathered together and
together built a temple for making merit and conducting
ceremonies. The temple has been called “Wat Chang” from that
time. |
