Description: |

Wat Khok is on the right side of the Chao Phraya River in Ban
Chang sub-district. Inside the temple, there is a Buddha image
in the attitude of meditation, a Mon-style pagoda made of brick
and mortar, an old pulpit made of pearl embedded in ebony wood
that is more than 100 years old and a sermon hall built and made
of teak, with rosewood pillars aged more than 100 years.
Pathum Thani has been a location of Mon people for at least 300
years since the reign of King Narai the Great in the Ayutthaya
period in 1479. Saming Po and his team took more than 10,000 Mon
people from Myanmar to settle at Ban Sam Khok in Pathum Thani to
run away from Angwa who oppressed them and hurt their feelings
to rely on the royal king’s grace. The Mon community on the
Thai land in Pathum Thani province was created ever since.
Famous Mon culture and traditions are Songkran festival and
others that we have never known or experienced such as: Mon
dance is an ancient Mon tradition along with a Mon orchestra and
5-10 girls in the national Mon dress, who dance beautifully and
wrap the shawl around her shoulders and long-sleeved and round
neck shirts. Their hair is put up in a bun bound with fresh
jasmine flowers and colorful flowers are placed behind their
ears. This tradition is rarely seen at the time being. Pha
Khaosan dance: A Mon tradition usually performed after the end
of Buddhist Lent, which is during the period of the Kathin robe
offering. A group of Pha Khaosan dancers will paddle a boat and
ask the people along the both banks of the river for a donation
of rice - Khaosan, money, and objects in order to offer to the
monk. Tak Bat Roi Phra: It is a merit making tradition of the
Mon, conducted at the end of Buddhist Lent. It is similar to Pha
Khaosan dance but its difference is that people from various
communities will bring savory food and desserts into a boat
awaiting near the bank of the Chao Phraya River for offering to
the monks. |
