Description: |
|
Luang Phor Dhavaravati is a respectable Buddha image of Muang Si
Mahosot. Nowadays, the Buddha statue is enshrined in a beautiful
Viharn in front of Si Mahosot District Office. Luang Phor
Dhavaravati is a standing sandstone Buddha image with 163
height, made by the craftsmen in early Dhavaravati period. The
statue reflects Indian artistic style during Gupta Empire,
around B.E. 11-13, with more than a thousand year old. Inside
the viharn is an altar with offerings for visitors to worship
Luang Phor Dhavaravati.
As for the discovery of Luang
Phor Dhavaravati, the Buddha image was found in the dune outside
Si Mahosot ancient city (originally called “Khok Peep”), in the
east within Leprosarium area. It was discovered in 1971 by a
Leprosy patient while he was breaking up the soil for planting.
At first, the Buddha statue was in the perfect condition.
However, after the fire broke out in the Viharn in 1996, the
statue was partly burnt and damaged. The Fine Arts Department
has then renovated and revived the statue to the former
condition. Luang Phor Dhavaravati is a beautiful sacred ancient
Standing Buddha image, which people come to pay a worship every
day.
