Wat Khongkharam
วัดคงคาราม
 Address:
 Known as:   จิตรกรรมฝาผนัง วัดคงคาราม
 Description:   The fine mural paintings delicately and diligently created by skillful Buddhist artists at Wat Kongkharam are similar to those of other important temples in depicting three worlds and Buddha’s life. These mural paintings are believed to be conducted by Bangkok artists during Rattanakosin period not earlier than the reign of King Rama III. The painter tries to depict scrupulously the life of Buddha by arranging his life’s events in order following the biography of Lord Buddha.

It is not difficult to find mural paintings especially in important temples; however, it can be quite complicated to judge whether which mural painting is more complete or beautiful without seeing with your own eyes. Wat Kongkharam is one of many Khmer temples located in Khlong Takot sub-district, Photharam district, 5 kilometers away from the district office in the north direction.

  The period in which Wat Kongkharam was constructed is still unknown. Still, according to local people with Khmer descents, they said that Khmer people moved to live near the Mae Klong River around the north of Photharam district until Bang Pong south district around the end of Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin period. This temple could be built after or before these Khmers had arrived. The temple used to be called “Wat Klang” and “Pia To” in Khmer language holding significant meanings which are;

1.The center of people and Pia To. The name was used when Mon was still the country. Later, King Rama IV had been giving robes for presentation to this temple for so many years and thus the temple was renamed “Wat Kongkharam”.

2.Raman clerical from the capital city was titled to be the abbot of this temple managing temples at both sides of the Mae Klong River. This temple has then become the major Raman temple in Ratchaburi. The important historical places inside the temple are Ubosot which has 6 Raman-style chedis which mean the 7 Raman cities. Today, the curator Santi Sanatikkaro is the principle monk of the temple.

The temple is open daily from 09.00-16.00. The entrance fee is 10 baht for both Thai and foreign visitors.
