Sao Ronghai, or “Crying Pillar”, is a massive post made of a
hardwood tree, known as Takhian. According to local belief, a
female spirit named Takhian Thong inhabits the pillar;
accordingly, all offerings to the pillar are for a woman. Legend
says that when Bangkok was to be named capital city, this pillar
was one of many scheduled to be delivered to be considered for
the construction of the city. The most beautiful pillar was to
chosen for the city. However, due to a delay, this particular
pillar was delivered too late. It is believed that had it
arrived on time, it would have been chosen. The pillar floated
away in the river and sank, remaining underwater for 100 years
before being rediscovered in 1958. The pillar was enshrined
in front of the prayer hall of a temple, Wat Sung. Locals say
that at night, the pillar makes a crying or weeping noise
(“Ronghai”), earning the sub-district the name of Tambon Sao
Ronghai, or “Crying Pillar Sub-district”. Nowadays, a bathing
ceremony for the female spirit is held on April 23 each year.
The pillar is located
in Nang Takhian Thong Shrine at Wat Sung, Sao Hai Sub-district,
500 meters from the Sao Hai District Office, on Highway No.
