WatEk is an ancient temple in Songkhla that has long history. It was built in the era that Krungsri Ayutthaya was the capital city of Siam. It was royally granted in 1557. It was assumed that this temple was glorious in the past. However, due to the lack of monks to take care, the temple was deteriorated. Since there is a sacred Buddha statue named “Luang Pho Derm” in the temple, local people therefore usually come to pray here for success and then come back again to be ordained here to fulfill their vows. Every year, a lot of Buddhist children came to be ordained here. Therefore, from 1991 until now, the temple has been improved, the area of the temple has been extended, and the landscape of the temple has been developed.
In 1993, the new monastery was built and the ceremony of gable was held in 1994. (Coins with the imitated image was produced) and the ceremony of sacred marker sphere and boundary stone placement was held in 2000.
In 1995, this temple received the development model prize and the abbot of this temple was promoted to be the leader abbot of Krasaesin District. Sunday Buddhist School, Dhamma Learning School, Meditation Center, and Dhamma Practice Programs were established.
In 2007, WatEk was selected to be the model in Temple Lover Program under Ministry of Culture. Other temple can study and adapt the development guideline of WatEk for their own temple.
WatEk nowadays gains more popularity. WatEk nowadays is not only the Buddhist place for commit religious ceremonies but also the self-development center of Buddhists, especially Dhamma Practice Program in religious days. This is the well-known program and has a great significance for enhancing ethics, morals, and Dhamma practice according to the guideline in Buddhism of Songkhla Province since 1994.
