Chaiya National Museum is situated at Wat Phra Borommathat
Chaiya, Tambon Wiang, Amphoe Chaiya.
It is a popular historical and archaeological museum in
Surat Thani. It is very
famous for holding prehistoric and historic artifacts, local
handicrafts and a shadow puppet.
The National Museum is
although a petite museum but it has two extensive buildings.
In the first building it has on display stone and bronze
sculptures belonging to the ancient city of Chaiya.
The sculptures in this building comprise of the God
Vishnu and Bohdisattva Avalokitesvara.
Besides, in the second
or say the last building Chaiya National Museum, contains
artifacts that belong to prehistoric down to historic periods
such as from Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Lop Buri, Sukhothai to
Ayutthaya. Apart from the
artifacts of these periods, this part of museum also houses art
objects and numerous other crafts.
To put it so, it can be
mentioned that the specialty of Chaiya National Museum is that
most of the exhibits that it contains date back to the time when
Chaiya was a stopover on the route between India and Southeast
Asia for trade.
However after a visit to Chaiya National
Museum, if you want to explore the beauty of other tourist spots
as well then famous Phra Borommathat Chaiya is located next to
it. From here you can
also go to another popular destination that isSuan
Mokkhaphalaram.
The Museum is open on Wednesday to Saturday
from 9.00 am. to 4.00 pm.
Admission fee is 10 baht for Thai
and 30 baht for foreigners. |
