Wat Don Keaw is located behind Mae Ramad District Office. The
temple is home to a marble image of Buddha in Subduing Mara
mudra, which is one of the three Burmese sculptures made from a
whole piece of marble existing worldwide. The first image is
situated in India, the second in Pakistan and the third here at
Wat Don Keaw, Moo 7, Mae Ramad District. In April 1922, Khun
Ramad Maitree and Mae Ramad people bought the image from the
Burmese for 800 rupee. The Buddha image is 50 inch wide and 63
inch tall. It was carried by water via the city of Mawlamyine
and all the way to Jongto Pier. Kruba Khao Ta Pee, a
well-beloved master of people and northern villagers, came to
receive the Buddha image and carried it on carriage to the town
of Krukkrik, Ban Jor Hae (a Karen village). The marble Buddha
image in the ubosot is the main Buddha image of the temple.
Wat Don Keaw is a recommended attraction for
tourists who are fond of handsome marble Buddha image which are
rare to find. The place is also a calm and beautiful cultural
site, which is most suitable for those who wish to practice
dharma amidst pleasant atmosphere from tree shades. |
