The Sao Chaliang is a sandstone since the Jurassic period that have been eroded by water and gravel for millions years. These earth pillars can be found scattered throughout the area in Pha Taem National Park.
It is a mushroom-like sandstone pillar caused by the process of decay and erosion of the hard and soft rock for about 110 million years. The softer rock was more eroded until it became a mushroom stalk while the harder rock was less eroded ,and thus remained as a mushroom cap.
