Thailand's Royal Barge Procession is a ceremony of both
religious and royal significance which has taken place for
nearly 700 years. The royal barges are a blend of craftsmanship
and traditional Thai art. The Royal Barge Procession takes place
rarely, marking only the most significant cultural and religious
events. During the long reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej,
spanning over 70 years, the procession has only occurred 16
times. The Royal Barge Procession, in the present, consists
of 52 barges, four are major royal barges, namely the
Suphannahong (Golden Swan), the Narai Song Suban (King Rama IX),
the Anantanakkharat (Multi-headed Naga), and the
Anekkachatphutchong (innumerable Naga figures). These barges
are manned by more than 2,082 oarsmen. The procession proceeds
down the Chao Phraya River, from the Wasukri Royal Landing Place
in Khet Dusit, Bangkok, passes the Temple of the Emerald Buddha,
the Grand Palace, Wat Po, and finally arrives at Wat Arun (Thai:
วัดอรุณ, 'Temple of the Dawn').
In 2019, The Royal Thai
Navy performed the royal
barge procession for the final procedure of the Coronation of
His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua
(Rama X). The royal barge procession took place on the
Thursday, 12 December 2019, when His Majesty the King travels
along the Chao Phraya River as part of his city tour on the
occasion of his coronation in 2019. There were 3 rehearsals
of the royal barge procession full-dressed before the royal
barge procession on the 12 Decmber 2019.
It is the first
royal barge procession in the present reign of King Rama X. The
previous royal barge procession took place on 9 November 2012 to
celebrate the 84th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX). This ceremonial
water-borne procession is a rare spectacle, arranged on special
occasions only. |
